Big Brother is Reading In
his younger days, my brother was not much of a reader. He did what he had to do to get through school and his outside literary
activities consisted of reading Mad Magazine and Boys Life, both of which he shared with me (as well as
his cast-off gym shirts and pungent sleeping bag when he went to serve in the U.S. Navy). Lately, however, he has become an
aficionado of historical non-fiction, voraciously consuming New York Times best-seller titles including David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants by Malcom Glaswell. While I am not a great fan of non-fiction, historical or otherwise, as much as he is, Tommy and I do chat
during our periodic phone calls about his latest "good read". Last week, he emailed me the following concise review: I just finished reading Killing Kennedy: The End of Camelot by Bill O`Reilly. I found the book to be informative and factual. Much
of the book depicts life in the white house during the Kennedy Presidency leading up to the assassination in Dallas Texas,
including the unrest between Bobby Kennedy and LBJ, Jackie Kennedy's life with JFK in the White House, and, thereafter, the
end of "Camelot". There are very descriptive accounts of the assassination which include much information that was
not published in the media about Lee Harvey Oswald and his life with his Russian wife, Maria. This book reads like a novel,
with both story and documentary features. At the end of the book there is a section of references that was used
to compile this book [written] without any personal input from O`Reilly or Martin Dugard, his collaborator.
I recommend that this history be presented in every history class throughout the USA. Happy to share!
Tommy's comments are short and to the point and it is reviews like these that inspire me to read the
book, even if it isn't an historical novel, but an eventful slice of history that should never be forgotten.
Thank you, big brother. We look forward to sharing with our followers more commentaries from you about your non-fiction ventures.
